Alicia-Fake Bridals

Back in the fall, I had this immense urge to take bridals and I guess my brain thought I could handle one more thing on my already full plate (I am going to assume that many photographers pile on more than they can handle in order suppress their photograpic addiction). But I digress . . . more than anything, I wanted to take bridals in the mountains before the beautiful fall leaves dissapeared. My friend Alicia was more than willing to be a model and I am so glad she had the time to spend an afternoon with me! Her amazing red hair was stunning against the autumn backdrop and she has such a natural look!

Before you get the photos, I need to take some time and thank Sarah Rigdon for being the fabulous make-up artist and hair stylist behind these photos. Sarah was even willing to tag along with me on the shoot and brave the cold in order to apply touch-ups.

Have you ever had a moment, so perfect, so magical . . . but it only exists in memory? Have you ever reminisced about a divine second in time and only wish it could have been captured on camera? Moments seem to get away from us so quickly; life moves so fast and there is so much to do in a day. I didn't know Caleb and Kayla prior to arriving at their reception to take photos but I could instantly tell they were meant for eachother! Both glowed with excitement, they seemed so comfortable with one another, and they couldn't wipe the smiles from their faces. This wedding was truly filled with love of the truest kind. Lately I have been feeling a lack of creativity and a lack of opportunity for creativity, so I decided to take action and get out of my slump. Last weekend, my friend Stephanie and her boyfriend volunteered to model for me and help me try out some new posing techniques, a new location, and new post-production edits.

I wanted to treat this photo shoot as a mini, personal mentor session. I wanted to challenge myself and ultimately be one step closer to translating the images in my head into photographs with feeling. For this first mini-session, I only used one location in order to force myself to rely on the subject of the photo instead of the environment. I also tried poses I have never used before when photographing couples. In post-production and editing, I tried out a warmer b&w and a warmer-yellow edit in order to mimic the rustic feel of the photos. I am also debuting a new watermark! The watermark is very much in the draft stages and will probably be refined many times.

Please let me know what you think if this first mini-session. Am I capturing emotion more effectively than before? Is the editing effective? Any suggestions and comments would greatly help me better explore my creativity!

What a joy to meet little Sofia Ibez! My dear friends Casey and Anna had their first child last week and asked me to take some photos. Sofia didn't want to "play photo" but once we got a bottle in her and wrapped her up in a warm blanket, she was a doll!

This past summer, I purchased a high-end scanner so I could start preserving family photos that are beginning to deteriorate. Along with my own family photos, I have had the opportunity to scan and restore photos for other families who are beginning to worry about the condition of the photographs in their family albums. It was 25 degrees the Sunday we set out to do photos and although our toes were frozen and our noses were red, I think we got some fantastic shots.

Copyright Infringement

Lately I've noticed an influx of copyright infringement among customers of local photographers. Often, I will view photos directly from the photographers website or facebook but when I view the photos from the client's site, the photos are different. The photos are often cropped differently, the color is changed, or the contrast is manipulated.

I want to take this opportunity to express my concern for this occurance. Not only is the manipulation of professional/copyrighted material illegal and those who infringe copyright can be sewed for damages, it is also disrespectful to the photographer.

Please, as a client or customer of photographers, keep in mind that you are the one who hired the photographer and his/her artwork. If you are not happy with his/her work, then don't hire them. If you are not quite happy with the photos and editing, many photographers will be willing to work with you to create a product both of you are happy with.

Speaking for myself, I offer an amazing package price for photos and I hope that my clients respect me enough not to manipulate the photos I give them. I fear the day that I will have to limit and charge an arm and a leg for photos and no longer release high resolution digital copies.

A stormy day couldn't keep us away! I had this family photo shoot scheduled for some time but on the day of the shoot it was raining, windy, and lightning threatened to keep us from taking photos. I talked with the family and we decided to head out to the Great Salt Lake even though we might get rained on. The weather cooperated, for the most part, but I am so glad we toughed it out because all of the photos turned out great!

One benefit of a summer storm, an amazing sunset!

Brother and sister . . . you can definitely tell they are related.

Can you say trouble? The kids were so cute but they definitely would have liked to spend their afternoon doing something other than getting their pictures taken.

I had a great opportunity to go on a tour of the British Isles with my school, so I took advantage and gave myself a senior trip. There were 26 of us that traveled across the world in order to record our experience using photography, writing, or videography. Eventually, all of the work that was produced by my fellow trip-goers will be published on a website. I have been wanting to photograph these two young ladies since I first met "S" for a headshot session. "S" has a Pakistani background while "B"'s family is from Bengal. These cute girls all caught the bouquet and wouldn't let go! By the end of the ordeal most of the flowers were scattered around the floor.

Although it took me 2 1/2 hours to get to this wedding because I was fighting traffic and BYU football fans heading to the game, this wedding was well worth the drive. So simple yet so elegant and the bride's dress was gorgeous. I wish you two the best!

"On the Other Side" is a short suspence film I helped make with Westminster's Reel Griffins. This was the club's first film and it turned out great! I was lucky enough to be the still photographer for this film. My job was to capture behind the scenes, what/how we were learning, and the story line itself. Reel Griffins just finished a Sex Education PSA and will be working on a new short film in the spring.

Quarky, fun, unconventional!! Three words that capture the essence of Emily and David's wedding. I have never heard of a wedding reception being held at a roller-skating rink but I was lucky enough to photograph the awesome event! I needed to take a trip down to the Salt Lake Temple to scope out the grounds for a wedding and although I would have enjoyed a peaceful walk around I couldn't pass up the opportunity to round up some volunteers and shoot some photos. I've known Taylor for . . . nine years? She just graduated from high school and is moving up to Utah State University this week. I know she is nervous to be away from home and leave behind family and friends so I asked if she had a girlfriend who she would want to do "girlfriend" shots with.

Taylor has known Eliza since fifth grade. Eliza will be attending the University of Utah (GO UTES!) in the fall which means these best friends will be a few hundred miles apart for the year. These photos turned out so great because they are so comfortable together. Thank you Taylor and Eliza for letting me celebrate your friendship. Good luck with college, I know you will love it!

I had never taken portraits for a guy and was a little worried I would have a difficult time capturing the masculin look, but luckily for me I have a little brother to use as a guinea pig. Instead of paying for professional senior portraits, I just took a ton of pictures of him. We do conventional pictures, cap and gown shots, tux shots, and even pictures of him in his kilt (which he did wear to graduation).

"N" has been my long time friend and neighbor. When I found out she was getting married and she wanted me to take her pictures, I couldn't say no! For "N" and "J"'s engagements, we went to a cute shopping village nearby. "N" and "J" were so fun to photograph . . . the only problem . . . they kept getting distracted--every pose would end in a kiss.
